I don’t usually buy books, I tend to learn things by myself via online resources or personnal experience. This is true when it concerns technical domains such as system administration or software development.

But when it comes to marketing and design it’s always usefull to have the expert point of view from a book.

Today while searching for a good book on MVC principles, I realised that I finally need more information on marketing and design than on technical stuff. Last time I bought a technical book, I read the first two chapters and then learned everything by myself…

So I deicded to change my search and found this amazing book.

I will probably make some posts on marketing and design in the next few weeks as to me, this is obvious that even the most beautifull code is nothing if you don’t do marketing on it (see the dotclear example, this cms engine is probably the most beautifully written app I’ve ever seen, but marketing is not the goal of the team, so it’s not well known)

That’s now official, Ubuntu 8.10 Release is out, codename Intrepid Ibex.

If you are really in a hurry, you can already do an update, but be aware that it will take quite some time. I did the upgrade yesterday evening (GMT+2) and it took me more than 5 hours to download all packages.

I must say that there is no visible *big* change, appart from tabs in nautilus.

You will also notice in this screenshot the eject icon on removable devices, really usefull and time saving.

One of the best thing to me is better support for my DVB-T Tuner and integrated webcam. This means I don’t need to install additional drivers for my DVB Tuner and it won’t break my webcam.

Here is a short list of changes for this version:

  • Kernel 2.6.27
  • Xorg 7.4
  • Samba 3.2 with ipv6 support and secure transfer
  • Network Manager 0.7 – works much better than previously
  • Firefox 3.0.3
  • Gnome 2.24
  • Improved Shutdown screen

One of the things I don’t like is it doesn’t integrate OpenOffice3.0.

Stay tuned as I will give you more feedback when I’ll have tested it more throughoutly.

It’s been a while since I made real update with ZdMultilang Wordpress plugin.

One of the most problematic part of the plugin was to define languages as language codes where not known of the users. So, in order to help you define your languages, next release of zdmultilang will include a language selector which has been made using the list of languages included in Wordpress.

The language selector will look like this. Clicking on a link will fill correct values, allowing you to modify them before to save.

As I said last week, I worked a lot on my Worpdress ZdStatistics plugin recently, and  I released last version today. It is available directly on Wordpress.
Version 2.0 is a major improvement for the plugin. A Major improvement in the way that all code was re-written (or at least 99% of it).

All charts are now [...]

I learned recently that Wikimedia, the foundation that is making Wikipedia,  is on the road to migrate their servers to a single Linux Distribution. Until then, they are using various flavors of Linux Redhat and Fedora.
They said that this move will will allow to simplify their system administration.
Wikimedia has around 400 servers running and this [...]

As I already said before, ZdStatistics version 2.0 will be out next week. It is quite operationnal and less spam is caught in the statistics as well as redirections.
This simply means that statistics are much more realistics. This new version will allow more tips and tricks for spam detection thanks to the search engine included.
