In these 30 themes, 15 are for KDE and 15 for Gnome. As a gnome user, I will list only those I really liked a lot. There are only 5 themes that really hit me when I saw them !

If you are really in a hurry, you can already do an update, but be aware that it will take quite some time. I did the upgrade yesterday evening (GMT+2) and it took me more than 5 hours to download all packages.

I must say that there is no visible *big* change, appart from tabs in nautilus.

You will also notice in this screenshot the eject icon on removable devices, really usefull and time saving.

One of the best thing to me is better support for my DVB-T Tuner and integrated webcam. This means I don’t need to install additional drivers for my DVB Tuner and it won’t break my webcam.

One of the things I don’t like is it doesn’t integrate OpenOffice3.0.

They said that this move will will allow to simplify their system administration.

Wikimedia has around 400 servers running and this is a major move for Ubuntu and will give the distribution the credibility it needs in large scale environments.

Indeed, Wikimedia server manage more than 10 Billion pageviews a month and peeks can see 50 000 hits per seconds.

Wikimedia is a rapidly growing technical environment as during their first 18 month they got for 15 server to 200.

Canonical prooves again the popularity and stability of their distribution, after releasing the first server edition in 2005.

Note that the new edition of Ubuntu (Intrepid Ibex) will be released at the end of October.

Because yes, that’s where the file templates should be located.

But, I discovered this file : ~/.config/user-dirs.dirs which contains directives to tell gnome where to find some files it needs.

Therefore you can tell Gnome where it will find it’s templates, but also where it has to look for your music, vidéos, pictures and so on…

For example, you can set it like this, with /media/mydata a vfat disk shared with a Windows system (or a Filer, Samba Share, etc…) or like me, just another ext3 disk.

Magento 1.1 features a new Webservices API that enables you to integrate with third parts applications.

I’m happy to see that magento is very well accepted because the software has already been downloaded more than 400.000 times and they recently received the Best New Open Source project award as the 2008 SourceForge.net Community Choice Awards

This new release will be included for next Gnome release, which will be 2.24 and will be included with most distributions, including Ubuntu Intrepid Ibex.

Be ready to be able to use this long awaited featured. I have been waited it for so long now, and it will really save my life !

It’s been awaited for so long, but even though it’s been used by many people to play games or run their Windows Apps under GNU/Linux (such as Photoshop, MS Office, etc…). But for the past monthes, the project had accelerated their development thanks to the Google Summer Of Code.

Of course, there is a long way to perfect compatibility, but none the less, we can keep this day as a great day for us Linux users because it’s Wine that gives us the chance to use applications for the other world

As long as editors like Adobe will refuse to publish their software under GNU/Linux, we will have to use Wine.

Gamers will be happy with this release because most of the bugfixes are games related.

Anyway, let’s wish all the best to this great project and of course, to GNU/Linux

In order to do so, you just have to use ASCII characters within your command-line. This will make them more eye appealing.

The syntax is the following :

with X:
0-> normal color
1-> bright color
3-> dark color
4-> underlined text
7-> highlighted text
9-> strike through text

With Y being the code for the color :
30 = Grey
31 = Red
32 = Green
33 = Yellow
34 = Blue
35 = Purple
36 = Cyan

The other “problem” is that at home, there is only GNU/Linux computers (2 laptops and a server), therefore, I needed to find a software running under GNU/Linux and allowing to do some basic video manipulation. That’s where Avidemux comes in handy. Just for information, Avidemux also exists under Windows and Mac OSX.

To install it, under Ubuntu, nothing more than a simple:

sudo apt-get install avidemux

Once installed, you will just need a few steps to turn around your video, but also using one of the numerous filters included with the software, such as crop, resize, colors, contrasts, sharp, etc…

After opening your video, you just need to add the Rotate filter and choose the correct angle (you can check using the preview button that everything is correct):

Once you chose the filter, you will have to re-encode the video so that the filter is processed. To do so, you will have to choose a new video format on the left of the main window. One very interesting thing with Avidemux is it’s capacity to create .flv videos, so that you can include your own videos on your website using a flash applet.

Première étape, cette fois-ci je n’ai pas opté pour l’installation directement, mais plutot par un démarrage sur le LiveCD puis installation si tout semble fonctionner. Donc à l’écran de démarrage, première chose qui continue de m’ennuyer, choisir la langue de l’interface, j’aurais préféré que cela reste optionnel.

Ensuite, le boot se passe parfaitement bien, relativement rapide (bien plus que Vista en tout cas). L’interface une fois chargée ne change pas tellement, les couleurs sont les mêmes, le fond d’écran arbore un magnifique Héron toujours dans les couleurs marron/orange d’Ubuntu.

Tout fonctionne, que ca soit compiz, le son, la résolution parfaitement choisie. Seul hic, toujours pas de Wifi par défaut, la faute de mon chipset AR5007EG pas encore reconnu par défaut, il existe bien un madwifi qui le supporte, mais… comment le télécharger sans réseau… Bref, pas grave, je lance l’installation tranquillement. Partitionnement décidé :

• 9Go pour le système
• 2Go de swap
• 2Go pour le /home
• 120Go restant pour l’espace de données.
• Le reste pour Vista… vu que j’ai payé la licence

L’installation se passe sans accros, une fois le redémarrage effectué, tout fonctionne bien, sauf le wifi, donc en quète d’installation du Wifi, via les drivers windows evidément, que je ne trouve pas sur le portable, Vista oblige, et que donc je récupère du pc de ma femme (installation faites le mois dernier).

Installation de ndiswrapper (présent sur le CD), puis des drivers, et hop me voila sur le net. Plus qu’a finir mon installation en ajoutant mes applis préférées.

Digikam, wine, Cheese (histoire de le tester), VLC, opera, firefox-2, les codecs vidéos, msttcorefonts et certainement d’autres que j’oublie.

A ce propos, je suis très décu de l’inclusion de Firefox 3 beta5 par défaut, car celui-ci bien que parfaitement stable sur la 7.10 se trouve être plein de bugs sur la 8.04 (barre d’adresse non fonctionelle…)

Par contre côté des bonnes choses, Brasero est déjà installé, tout comme Transmission (client bittorent).

Donc voilà, cette fois-ci, je suis pleinement satisfait de cette nouvelle version, qui toutefois impose d’avoir une carte vidéo reconnue par défaut (la mienne étant à base de chipset Intel), sous peine de galérer pour activer correctement les effets.
